To help keep your Rentman account secure, we have introduced an extra layer of protection on our login and registration pages. As part of these improvements, you may see a warning letting you know that the password you are using has appeared in a known data breach.
This message can look alarming, but do not worry, it does not mean your Rentman account has been hacked.
Below, we explain what this warning means, why we show it, and what you should do next.
What does the warning mean?
Many data breaches on the internet result in large lists of leaked passwords being made publicly available. Cybercriminals often use these lists to try to guess or break into accounts on other websites.
When you see this message, it simply means:
- The password itself has appeared in one of these publicly known leaks at some point in the past.
- Someone using the same password (not necessarily you) had their password exposed in an external data breach.
How do we check this without sending your password?
Your privacy and security are extremely important to us. That is why we use the trusted Have I Been Pwned password-checking service, which is widely used across the industry.
We use a privacy-preserving method called k-Anonymity. This allows us to check whether a password has been seen in a breach without ever sending the full password, or anything that can reveal it, to anyone.
In other words:
- We never send your password to Have I Been Pwned.
- Your password is only sent to Rentman for secure authentication — it is never shared externally.
- The check is safe, anonymous, and designed specifically to protect users.
If you would like to learn more, Have I Been Pwned explains this method here.
Why do we show this warning?
Using a password that has appeared in a data breach, even if it was not your account that was breached, greatly increases the risk of someone guessing or compromising your login.
By warning you, we help ensure your Rentman account remains protected.
You will see this message:
- When you try to create a new account using a password that appears in known data breaches.
- When you log in using such a password (so you can update it as soon as possible).
What should you do if you see this message?
To stay secure, we strongly recommend updating your password:
- Choose a new, unique password that you do not use on any other website.
- Make it strong, ideally using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Consider using a password manager to generate and store secure passwords.
Updating your password ensures that even if an old password exists in breach records, your Rentman account remains safe.
