This article explains how the Rentman MCP works and shares practical guidelines for getting the most out of it, safely.
The MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a secure connection that lets AI tools work with your Rentman data, so you can ask questions and get answers based on your own business information - in plain language, without using the API directly. Any AI client that supports MCP can connect, including the most common ones such as Claude, ChatGPT.
The MCP sits behind a dedicated permission, so only Account admins can enable it. An admin needs to switch the permission in the Configuration module on before anyone in your workspace can connect.
You may already be familiar with the Rentman API, which is built for developers who want to create their own integrations from scratch. The MCP is built on top of that API - it’s the no-code way to connect AI tools to your Rentman data, so you don’t need to write or maintain any code yourself. If you’re not a developer, the MCP is what you’re looking for.
Using the MCP safely
Always review what the AI does
This matters most before any change is made. When your AI client is about to take an action in Rentman - adding a contact, creating a project request, or drafting something for you - it will usually ask for your permission first. Take a moment to confirm that the action matches what you actually intended.
Be specific when you ask
The more detail you provide, the better the answer. For example:
- Less effective: “What’s our equipment situation?”
- More effective: “What is our total Pioneer CDJ3000 stock?”
Project names, dates, equipment types, and any other concrete details help the assistant give you accurate, relevant results.
Start small, then build up
If you’re new to working with AI alongside Rentman, start with one straightforward question, for example, “Show me my open project requests”. Once you see how the assistant responds, you can chain into more complex tasks, such as “Now add a new request for the festival on the 15th.”
Some workflows are partial today
The MCP beta can suggest a crew plan, for example, but you’ll paste the result back into Rentman yourself. It can’t yet create quotes or invoices end to end. We’ll continue to expand what’s possible in future versions.
Switch on hourly backups
Expect changes during beta
We’ll keep improving the MCP throughout the beta - the safeguards, the permissions, and how the experience feels. Some things will get better quickly. Some things might break. That’s what beta is for.
Join the MCP beta community
The MCP beta is also a conversation starter for what comes next. We're actively gathering feedback to shape API v2 and the future of Rentman's AI.
We're launching a dedicated MCP beta community on our new Rentman community platform - a space to share ideas, ask questions, learn from other beta users, and stay up to date as we evolve the integration.
Whether you want to swap workflow tips, request new endpoints, or simply follow along, the community is the best place to be part of the conversation.
