When you connect the Rentman MCP to Claude.ai, you control exactly which parts of your Rentman account Claude is allowed to access and how much autonomy Claude has when using each tool. This article explains the permission settings and how to configure them for your workflow.
The Rentman MCP connector exposes 55 tools: one for each type of data in your Rentman account (contacts, equipment, projects, invoices, crew, and more). Tool permissions let you decide, for each tool individually, whether Claude can use it automatically, must ask you first, or is blocked entirely.
You can find these settings in Claude.ai under Settings → Connectors → Rentman → Tool permissions.
What do the three permission icons mean?
| Icon | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| ✅ | Always allow | Claude can call this tool automatically whenever it is relevant, with no interruption to your conversation. |
| ✋ | Ask every time | Claude must pause and explicitly request your approval before using this tool. You see a prompt and can approve or deny in the moment. |
| 🚫 | Never allow | Claude is completely blocked from using this tool, regardless of what you ask it to do. |
What does the "Custom" setting mean at the top?
The Custom label means you have configured different permission levels for individual tools, rather than applying one blanket rule to all 55 tools at once. This is the most flexible option, for example, allowing Claude to freely read contacts while requiring approval before touching invoices.
You can also choose a global preset (Allow all / Ask for all / Block all) from the dropdown to apply the same rule across every tool instantly.
Why are some tools greyed out or blocked by default?
Some tools may be greyed out if they are not available in your Rentman license.
Can I change these permissions at any time?
Yes. Navigate to Claude.ai → Settings → Connectors → Rentman and adjust any tool permission at any time. Changes take effect immediately in your next conversation with Claude.
Note: Permissions are saved per Claude.ai account. If multiple team members use the same Rentman integration, each person configures their own permission set independently.
AI is still a new technology, and it isn’t perfect. It can misunderstand a question, give an answer that sounds confident but isn’t quite right, or invent details that don’t exist. The MCP beta will save you real time, but it’s not a tool to use blindly. Review the guidelines for using the MCP to get the most out of it.
